A Perfect Day for a Paddle

The weather couldn’t have been better for our journey along the dramatic Seven Sisters coastline. Although the forecasted northerly wind was around Force 4, the towering chalk cliffs offered excellent protection, making for calm conditions as we hugged the shoreline.
We met at the designated RV point as detailed in the briefing—a convenient spot with ample parking (at least outside peak season!) and, much to our relief, newly refurbished toilet facilities. We were also joined by paddlers from Portsmouth Canoe Club, who happened to be undertaking the same route, adding to the sense of camaraderie.
Setting Off
With kayaks packed, cars locked, and keys safely stowed, we carried our boats down to the waterline. The tide was still flooding, with just under three hours left before slack. Before launching, we took time for a proper briefing, reinforcing safety practices and allowing everyone to introduce themselves and discuss any considerations for the trip.
The Journey to Beachy Head

The outbound leg was 11 km, with a planned stop at Birling Gap before reaching Beachy Head Lighthouse. Our break at Birling Gap might have stretched a little too long, and by the time we set off for the final 3 km, the tide had turned. With the wind veering east, we found ourselves paddling against both wind and ebbing tide, making the last stretch to the lighthouse more challenging than expected.

Despite this, the group pushed on, rounding the iconic Beachy Head Lighthouse—a rewarding milestone and a spectacular sight from the water.
Lunch Stop and the Return Journey
We returned to Birling Gap, one of the few suitable landing points along this stretch. The café and toilets provided a welcome break, and we were met by an enthusiastic crowd of visitors. Many were keen to snap photos of the paddlers, while some of the younger onlookers eagerly lent a hand with relaunching our boats after lunch.

The return journey (11 km back to Seaford) was pure enjoyment. With the easterly wind and the ebbing spring tide now in our favor, we cruised effortlessly, basking in the glorious sunshine and soaking in the breathtaking views of the chalk cliffs towering above us.
Capturing the Adventure

Alan took some fantastic photos, including one that truly captured the immense scale of the towering chalk cliffs, making our kayaks look tiny in comparison. Meanwhile, Kim put together a brilliant Instagram reel—complete with a great soundtrack—showcasing the highlights of the trip. From stunning seascapes to dynamic paddling shots and a few candid moments, the reel really captured the energy and beauty of the day.
